Self Defense – Practice Makes Perfect

Self Defense – Practice Makes Perfect

It was only 5:00 PM on a cold night when she left the department store at the other end of the mall from where she had parked her car. It was dark outside already.

As she leisurely made her way thru the mall, half window shopping half thinking about her date with her new boyfriend, she suddenly got one of those feelings. You know the kind. The kind of feeling where the hairs bristle on the back of your neck from fear. You feel like someone just gave you a glass full of ice water down your back. Kind of frightening!

She quickly turned around to see nothing obvious-only scores of other shoppers. Only NOW she was on ALERT.

As Bonnie left the mall she started thinking about her plan. Where are my keys? Where’s my pepper spray? Did I leave my telescopic baton in the car? Where is the damn car anyhow?

She walked with her head up and with confidence reaching for her keys and pepper spray. Now armed with the spray in one hand and her keys as a weapon in the other, she approached her car.

Suddenly out of nowhere she heard the voice of a male 8 feet behind her asking her for directions. Before he could get another word out of his mouth she spun around and yelled at the top of her lungs “BACK OFF” and pointed the pepper spray at him.

She was loud enough that people 60 feet away in the parking lot looked up to see what was going on. The assailant wanna be saw this and took off before Bonnie could even get a good look at him.

Lessons to be learned are:

• TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS Better to be safe than sorry.

• HAVE A PLAN Take some self defense classes and learn how to react. They are everywhere. Self defense DVD’s are great.

• PRACTICE In your mind run thru what you are going to do and how you will do it. Practice with your non lethal self defense weapons so that using them is second nature.

• ALWAYS CARRY Have some kind of non lethal self defense weapons handy at all times. “Walk softly and carry a big pepper spray.”

Sometimes fate is not on your side. Isn’t it better to be prepared and win than fall victim to some goon and suffer the consequences? Practice does make perfect!

Diabetes – 40 Year Old Belief Debunked?

Diabetes – 40 Year Old Belief Debunked?

For nearly 40 years it has been common knowledge and generally accepted fact that certain minority groups have had a gene that made them predisposed to the awful disease of diabetes.

Just yesterday it was announced that a group of Australian and U.S. researchers are close to dispelling the myth. The findings are published in the spring issue of the journal ‘Perspectives in Biology and Medicine’.

“Our study challenges the presumption that Native American, Mexican American, African American, Australian Aborigine, or other indigenous groups are genetically prone to diabetes because the evidence demonstrates that higher rates of diabetes across population groups can be explained by non-genetic factors alone.” said Michael Montoya an Anthropologist at UC Irvine.

“When it comes to diabetes, we’re finding that genes are no more important for ethnic minorities than for anyone else,” said Stephanie Fullerton, a population geneticist and bio-ethicist at the University of Washington and co-author of the study.

The study goes on to point out that in most of the previous studies on contributing genes to diabetes inadequate controls were in place for things such as social and environmental factors. Examples were poverty, housing segregation, and poor diet.

There will be more on this study in the future I am sure-for now what does it mean? Well there are two types of contributing factors for diabetes: Controllable and Uncontrollable. Genetic predisposition is in the Uncontrollable column. Diet and lifestyle are in the controllable.

I humbly submit that this is huge news for those minorities who might have felt that getting diabetes was part of their heritage and something they had to live with. NOT SO!!! If you can control this terrible disease it will only put a dent in your life not ruin it.

Diabetes – What is Type 2 Diabetes?

Diabetes – What is Type 2 Diabetes?

Type 2 Diabetes is by far the most common type of the disease accounting for 90-95% of all cases. The American Diabetes Association (ADA) estimates that 21 million Americans have diabetes and that only two thirds of them even know it. Type 2 starts in middle age or later. It is growing so rapidly because of the epidemic in obesity not only in the US but all over the world. There is no cure but there is plenty you can do to prevent it and then control it.

Type 2 is a chronic condition that affects the way your body metabolizes sugar the main source of fuel. When people eat food, it is broken down into a sugar known as glucose, which is then released into the blood where it is carried to cells inside the body. Insulin is made by the pancreas to help the cells use the glucose from the blood.

People with Type 2 Diabetes have insulin resistance which prevents insulin from processing glucose properly. Soon more and more insulin is produced to overcome the resistance. During the later stages of the disease as the resistance increases, the blood glucose increases to above safe levels, but the body can’t use it properly and the body actually starves for more energy.

If left untreated and again most people don’t know they have it, disastrous results are sure to come. It increases risk for eye, nerve, blood vessel, heart, and kidney problems.

Many people diagnosed with Type 2 are obese and have a sedentary lifestyle. Just getting older is also a risk factor, because as we age our resistance to insulin can rise too. 21 percent of people over 60 have diabetes-a scary statistic!!

The most important thing to remember, if you are diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes is that it is possible to control your diabetes instead of letting it control you. But it is in your hands.

Home Security-Hidden Cameras-Who Needs Them?

Home Security-Hidden Cameras-Who Needs Them?

It is clear to me that NOT everyone needs a hidden camera or a surveillance camera!

Only those people who have any earthly possessions that they cherish (including children) should have one.

You do want to know what is going on when you are not there don’t you? What is that smell from the last time we had a babysitter?

Or those who are married or have a significant other-they should get one too!

You do want to know what is going on when you are not there don’t you. Cheating spouses is one of the fastest growing areas in the Private Investigation field. But your spouse wouldn’t do that now would he/she?

And those who have a place to live: an apartment or home-well they should probably have one too.

You do want to know what is going on when you are not there don’t you? You do want to make sure your stuff stays your stuff and not being fenced downtown somewhere don’t you?

And those folks who happen to own a business: well I guess they ought to have one too!

You do want to know what is going on when you are not there don’t you? Why do we have so many under rings and over rings on the register when I am not around? And last week our inventory seemed to just disappear? And the shoplifters they all hang out at other stores right?

Or college students or apartment dwellers who have roommates-well they might need one!

You do want to know what is going on when you are not there don’t you? College students are honest aren’t they? That is why they are in college. I mean your roommate wouldn’t steal from you now would he?

I guess that about covers it. They are probably they only ones who need a spy camera to find out what is going on when you are not there. Did I forget someone? Let me know.

Diabetes-New Type 2 Risk Factors Identified

Diabetes-New Type 2 Risk Factors Identified

Type 2 diabetes is a disease that affects nearly 21 million in the United States and the incidence of the disease has skyrocketed in the last 30 years. Diabetes is a major cause of heart disease and stroke, as well as the most common cause in U.S. adults of blindness, kidney failure and amputations not related to trauma.

It is growing in some countries at the astounding rate of 50% a year and is becoming an international epidemic.

A study involving the genomes of 32,554 people were tested making it one of the largest genome-wide association efforts conducted to date. Researchers from the University of Michigan, the National Human Genome Research Institute, the University of Southern California, the University of North Carolina, and Finland’s National Health Institute conducted the study.

The findings will be posted in April in the online edition of the journal ‘Science’.

They have identified at least four new genetic variants associated with increased risk of diabetes and confirmed existence of another six. “This achievement represents a major milestone in our battle against diabetes. It will accelerate efforts to understand the genetic risk factors for this disease, as well as explore how these genetic factors interact with each other and with lifestyle factors,” said National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director Elias A. Zerhouni, M.D.

“These genetic risk factors will make it more likely that we can predict who is at risk for the disease,” says Richard Bergman, Ph.D., the chair of the department of physiology and biophysics at the Keck School of Medicine of USC. “We know type 2 takes a long time to develop and if we can identify those at risk of the disease, we may be able to prevent or delay the risk of disease in these people.”

“This is a very exciting time for the genetics of type 2 diabetes. There are real signals in the genome for the disease. Many are unexpected or unexplained and each one accounts for only a small risk,” says Tom Buchanan, M.D., professor of medicine at USC. “However, together they account for a lot of risk. Our challenge now, a challenge that the USC Diabetes Group has already begun to undertake in human studies, is to figure out how the risk genes work and how they work together with environmental factors to cause diabetes.”

Of course the closer researchers get to finding a cause for diabetes, it follows that a cure cannot be far behind. So there is hope!

Self Defense-The 10 Minute Miracle Pepper Spray Cure for the Common Assault

Self Defense-The 10 Minute Miracle Pepper Spray Cure for the Common Assault

A violent crime occurs every 19 seconds and an assault every 29 seconds. Yet a lot of folks are lulled into sense of complacency after they get their non lethal self defense weapon-their pepper spray. On the contrary having a non lethal self defense weapon is only the first step towards defending yourself.

The next step is to get some formal training-your local police department may be able to help. The next safest bet is to go online and check out some resources there.

Mentally rehearse what you will do in case of an emergency-PRACTICE! Physically rehearse using your pepper spray-PRACTICE! Practice against an imaginary assailant until you are comfortable with your ability to use it quickly and effectively-PRACTICE!

DID SOMEONE SAY PRACTICE?

Remember an assailant may try to get the pepper spray away from you. That is why it is so important to react quickly, reflexively-in an instant to successfully defend yourself. The time you have to recognize an assault and bring the spray to action may be less than a second!

When you are on foot, especially in the dark, in an isolated area carry your pepper spray in your hand ready for use. It is not a bad idea to have pepper sprays in your car, your home, place of work, and of course with you to cover any contingency.

A short burst of pepper spray well aimed in the eyes will allow you up to 20 minutes to escape, subdue the assailant, or get help. That is the 20 minute cure for the common assault.

Women are particularly vulnerable, especially those who work late at night, those in sales positions, real estate agents, and those who live alone. They in particular need self defense products such as an effective OC pepper spray.

For would be victims of a robbery, assault, theft, rape, murder, or kidnapping an investment of $15- $25 for a pepper spray is certainly worth the peace of mind and sense of security it provides.

Please Note that even though pepper spray is legal in all 50 states, some states and cities have restrictions. Check with your local police department. Literally thousands of police departments carry and use pepper spray. Why wouldn’t you?
